As we head back to work after a summer break for much of Europe, it’s a busy issue for Airline Cargo Management.


Our airline interviews give us insights into two very different markets that nonetheless share a high level of potential. From Africa – where Ethiopian Cargo gives us a tour of its vast cargo facilities and reveals more about the goods flows that are filling them – to Asia, where Malaysia Airlines’ MASkargo sets out its plans for growth and the exciting regulatory developments in the region that are going to drive it.


We take an in-depth look at three very different business sectors and explore how the air cargo sector caters to their needs.


For fast fashion manufacturers it’s all about speed, as well as getting the ‘final mile’ right to ensure the latest trends are on the shelves exactly when customers want them. Haute couture is a different story – when it comes to transporting designer goods or pieces for fashion shows, security is key. E-commerce is shaking up the way logistics operators serve these clients.

 

The entertainment sector can be secretive about its logistics projects, but when it comes to getting unwieldy and irreplaceable sets, props or instruments to the right place at the right time, it is clear that air cargo is the only viable option.


Flying our four-legged – and sometimes two-winged or many-finned – friends around the world is big business, whether it’s for agriculture, horse-racing, zoo exchange, conservation, or simply to allow an owner to keep a much-loved pet despite moving overseas. Some of the airlines that pride themselves on offering the best possible conditions for the transportation of live animals explain what this process entails. Invariably, preparation and commitment from dedicated, qualified, animal-loving staff is part of the deal.

 

E-commerce is the word on everyone’s lips – and nowhere more so than in Asia, where we find out about how huge demand is carving out new trade flows in the region.


Back in Europe, we speak to GEODIS about its strategy and hear more about how a tentative recovery in the oil and gas sector – as well as huge, high-value projects that had been put on hold, but are now starting to be dusted off – is helping to boost demand for charter operators.


And we hear from industry bodies and operators about how the drive for digitisation is going – and what more needs to be done.
