Rising star – Patrick Fitz

Patrick Fitz, 34. was nominated by Susanne Kühn, marketing and business development manager, Airpas Aviation

What’s your job title?

I’m a consultant at Airpas Aviation.

Do you have any training or any under or post-graduate education in this area?

I hold a Masters in Technical Business Administration, but alongside that I have 12 years of ground handling experience, in both passenger and cargo, as well as two years of airline consulting experience.

When and where did you start in the air cargo industry?

It was back in 1996. I started out as a student at the cargo warehouse at Stuttgart Airport.

How or why did you get into this industry?

I think you can boil it down to my general interest in aviation – it was this that eventually got me involved with airline cargo.

What were your first impressions of the industry – and have they lasted?

My first impression was in the mid-90s, and it was that the time-critical aviation business was not very synchronised with the general cargo industry. Since then it’s fair to say that this first impression has partly remained true.

What interests you about air freight?

Apart from my general interest in civil aviation, I think air freight is one of the most important drivers for the global economy. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement in the logistical process – that is certainly one area I would like to contribute to.

What do you think the industry needs to be better at?

One area that certainly needs improving is the gathering of reliable end-to-end data that can be used to improve cargo airlines’ operational planning processes and cost management.

Why do you think you have done well so far in your job?

I have certainly improved our airline’s cost management solution with regards to air freight requirements. I’m happy to have been able to help make that change.

What are you doing this week?

This week I’ve been working on a specific customer’s cost management solution for catering.

What have you been putting off?

When the work levels go up it means that I’m unable to play any sport, which is unfortunate.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I take the most satisfaction from helping to improve customer processes. It’s one of the most important aspects of my role.

And your least favourite?

As with many others, it’s the travelling by train.

What are your aims for this year?

This year I’ve been working on running an implementation project at another cargo airline. It’s something I’m looking to get going this year.

Do you expect to stay long term in this industry?

Yes. Of course!
